Something AMAZING is happening to Bradford this weekend: Malala Yousafzai will be speaking at Bradford Cathedral on Saturday 5th November as part of the programme for the Women of the World tour of festivals. But being a globally recognised educational rights activist, the capacity for the discussion she is taking part in has of course already sold out – it’s a FREE ticketed event.
So, the rest of us will be hanging around outside the cathedral, hoping that proximity to such an inspiring voice will somehow rub off on us as we live and breathe the same air.
The first day of WOW Bradford happened yesterday (Friday 4th November), featuring Grace Savage (two time beatboxing champion), Dina Tokio (hijabi fashionista and social media icon). See the full weekend programme online here.
There is one more full day of activities remaining TOMORROW, Sunday 6th November where I will be setting up my henna stall up on the 3rd floor and offering Artist’s Choice henna designs for the day, available in between the many, many inspiring women’s events. WOW – Women of the World Bradford is the first of nine new WOW festivals over the next two years.
The festivals are funded by Spirit of 2012.
WOW Bradford takes place in Kala Sangam, Bradford, from Saturday 5 – Sunday 6 November with a special schools’ day for an invited audience of local secondary school students on Friday 4.

It joins Southbank Centre’s worldwide network of WOW festivals to celebrate the achievements of women and girls, look at the obstacles preventing them from reaching their potential and discuss possible solutions.
Bringing together artists, activists, inspirational speakers and a varied mix of performers, it takes on everything from body politics to online dating, street harassment to the badass women of Bradford.
The festival is jam-packed with fun activities too – come along and have a go at being a rock star, try some gaming or learn about the chemistry of curry.
The WOW Bradford Marketplace comes to the Kala Sangam foyer throughout the weekend. It’s a festival hub, a central place for networking and an area where local businesses and charities can showcase their work.
WOW Bradford is providing education and participation opportunities in the lead-up to the festival, through a range of training programmes for volunteers.
